INTRODUCTION

Thank you for your interest in MindFire Renewed and FireWeed.  MindFire is a quarterly journal of the literary arts.  FireWeed is a mini-monthly to fill the time between MindFire issues.  MindFire is open for submissions year around.  Each issue includes a variety of works in each area and features a lead poet.  Due to the amount of submissions MindFire receives, authors will generally not be published in consecutive issues.  We appreciate all submissions and value the work, but must warn that there may be a delay between the time of receipt and actual publication.

MindFire accepts submissions of all things literary:  poetry, fiction, flash/metafiction, nonfiction (articles, essays, criticism, history, interviews, and reviews), calls for papers (CFPs), anthologies, contests, and similar literary notes, and literary fusions (ie, writings that are experimental, blends, or art/photography based).  Literary nonfiction will be given precedent.  Foreign and multi-language poetry is welcome, see details below.  MindFire also accepts published books and chapbooks for review via snailmail.  (We encourage all work to be submitted via email, but recognize that review books, chapbooks, and some lengthy nonfiction or poetic works may require snail mail submissions.  For such submissions, please use the address below.)

See below for submission details.

Submissions by email are encouraged.  All attachments must be in Rich Text Format (.RTF).  Artists/photographers query first before sending portfolios.  All submissions should include brief bio.  Simultaneous submissions are not allowed.  Previously published material of merit is sometimes accepted, if the prior publication is noted.  Material previously published off the web will be given precedent to web publications.  Submissions from unnamed sources will not be used.  Authors may publish under pseudonyms or screen names, but only if the author’s legal name is included in submission to MindFire.  We reserve the right to reject any submission or pseudonym.

We will not, due to human dignity, publish works of hate or pornography.  Remember that our audience is worldwide and broadminded works are far more relevant.

Send all general queries, comments, and official communciation to the editor, Gary Blankenship.

The email addresses for other genres are listed below.

DETAILS

We encourage unknown authors and will endeavor to publish new talent in every issue.  Translations of works must be accompanied by original.

Poetry:

Limit of three poems per submission.  MindFire has no restrictions as to poetic style, subject, or length (within reason).  We encourage diversity.  We like experimentation and exploration, things that break boundaries.  However, we also very much respect classical forms, when done well. Quality is our sole criterion.  Challenge us:  We are here to set the mind ablaze.

MindFire accepts poetry in any language.  We perfer they be accompanied by a dual English translation, but will publish work without an English translation.  Below we list our foreign language editors.  Please send  language work to the appropriate editor.  If no such regional editor exists, please use the general submissions address and we evaluate the work.

We encourage unknown poets and will endeavor to publish new talent in every issue.

Nonfiction: Nonfiction can be magnificent.  Italo Calvino stated that the greatest Italian author was Galileo, second only to Machiavelli.  So make it count.  MindFire accepts essays, articles, criticisms, histories, interviews, reviews, etc., on any subject, but literary subjects will be given precedent for publication.  For example in poetic non-fiction, we would like to see essays, articles, criticisms on the art itself, to histories and studies of individual poets, forms, movements, or schools, to interviews with poets and reviews of new books of poetry.  Essays may be experimental forms of literary nonfiction.  Concerning the articles, histories, and serious studies, proper form applies, as they are formal writing of semi-academic levels for professional peers.  All quotes and research must be fully annotated and verifiable, with bibliographic materials documented via accepted academic publishing standards (MLA, Turabian, or Chicago).  Due to the limitations of various web browsers, footnotes are discouraged.  Notations should appear in the body or as end notes.  Though length is negotiable, 10,000-20,000 words is a good maximum.

Reviews: We are looking for excellent reviews of excellent works.  Reviews need to be insightful, sparkling of surface but deep in study, and generally positive.  There isn't much need to waste time writing or reading a review of a terrible book.  Remember, we are here to promote writers and literature, not tear things down.  Just as we will publish writer's reviews of books, we also review books and chapbooks in house.  Ebooks and echaps may be submitted online to the editors; please query first for format.  Hardcopy versions should be submitted to MindFire Reviews at the address below.

CFPs, Anthologies, Contests, Announcements, etc.:  We welcome all notices and call for submissions of a literary nature.  Keep in mind the quarterly nature of the journal.  Dates must be applicable beyond the forthcoming issue of the calendar year (April, July, October, January.)

Nonfiction Editor:  mindfirejournal@aol.com

Fiction:  How good can it get?  Show us.  Any genre or style is acceptable.  Quality is the sole criterion.  Though length is negotiable, 10,000-20,000 words is a good maximum.

PLEASE SEND SUBMISSIONS ONE TO AN EMAIL IN THE BODY OF THE EMAIL, AND LIMIT SUBMISSIONS TO TWO A QUARTER.  SUBMISSIONS WITH MULTIPLE ATTACHMENTS MAY BE RETURNED UNREAD.

Flash/Meta-fiction:  MindFire is devoted to creativity.  We accept flash fiction, well done fusions of poetic-fiction, creative nonfiction-fiction, and especially those experiments in metafiction blending literary and other artistic styles.  We are looking for exceptional literary-art fusions of photography/audio/video/art blended with poetry or fiction.  Think Don Barthelme and then reinvent the wheel for dolphins in outerspace.  Again, we urge you to challenge us and strike like lightning.

General Fiction Editor:  Everyfkah@aol.com

Art/Photography:  MindFire desires original art and photography for covers and interior pages.  Artists are encouraged to submit unique, intelligent, engaging, different, and/or morphic works for consideration.  Any topic/subject/medium acceptable in quality.  Remember to try and capture the essence of the magazine:  creativity, which is the fire of the mind itself.  Occasionally we will run artistic series, spotlights, fusion specials, and collections.  Typically we use .JPG or .GIF formats; if different query first.  All artwork/photography will be credited.  Include a contributor's bio with submission.

Art/Photography Editor:  micolors@aol.com

Books and Chapbooks:  At this stage neither Mind Fire Press or Santiam Publishing is publishing books or chapbooks.  A printed annual of MindFire journal is being considered.  For review of such items, see Reviews section above.

Queries:  Generally, any subject or style is acceptable.  However, if you have doubts or questions concerning any topics of submission, send inquiries to the editor for review:  garydawg@msn.com

Name:  Include your full name (alias if you wish one) as you wish it listed in MindFire, your email address, and bio.  Your email address will be included.  We believe in free and open communication between author and readers.

Author's Bios:  Be brief, usually 50 words or less.  Include any other
pertinent personal information, publication history, or details on your writing.  Your bio may include a personal website URL, book link, etc.

Author's Inspiration: This is a brief sentence or two describing the source of your inspiration when writing.  This is not required, however it adds depth to the reader's understanding and experience of the work.   We may ask author’s for additional information about their work.

DISCLAIMER

By submitting the author attests that all work is entirely theirs, that it is an original creation, and that the author retains the copyright and use of said work.  The author is granting MindFire first rights and subsequent archival presentations of said work.  MindFire Press believes in the sanctity of the artist and therefore writers retain all rights to their work.  If works published here are published elsewhere, we ask merely that MindFire be credited.

NOTIFICATION

Notification of acceptance or other status will be sent via e-mail.  If you specifically request comments or criticism, you will receive them.  Otherwise, due to the high volume of submissions, we may not be able to comment on all works.  We are not here to discourage poets or shackle their creative muses.  MindFire is committed to literary excellence and we work solely to promote modern literature and authors.  We try to respond as quickly and fully as possible.  Feel free to contact us with any and all comments or questions.

There is currently no monetary compensation for work published in MindFire Renewed.  Authors retain rights.  However, all work received is reviewed for consideration in any annual we may publish.  Publication carries permission to submit the work for prizes such as Pushcart, archive works, and use works in current and future advertising or specials.

MindFire Renewed, though reenvisioned, is the revival of the decade old Mind Fire journal and a division of Mind Fire Press.
